The men’s tennis team competed in the Atlantic 10 Championships the Thursday before Spring Weekend. The Rams entered the match as the 11 seed, and they faced the 6 seed, Saint Louis. The final score was 1-4, with two singles matches halted because the first team to get to four points wins the round. It was a close match, and Fordham fought hard, ultimately ending their season with a 11-9 record.
The doubles matches made the tournament look promising for the Rams. They won two out of the three doubles matches, earning them the doubles point. Freshman Allen Thornes and senior Tomas Cosmai won the second doubles position with a score of 6-3. In third doubles, senior Nick Borak and junior Joseph Kavaloski defeated their opponents 6-3. Then, the tournament moved to the singles play.
There were a total of six singles matches, but only four were played out to the end, as a team needed to reach four points to win. Saint Louis happened to win the first four singles matches. Freshman Jeremy Chung lost 1-6, 3-6 in the sixth singles position, while Borak dropped his match with a score of 2-6, 5-7. Cosmai’s match went to three sets, with the final score being 6-2, 6-7, 6-3. Finally, freshman Fabian Mauritzson also played a three-setter.
His match ended with a score of 2-6, 6-4, 2-6.
The Atlantic 10 Championships were a four day tournament, but it was also a knockout tournament. Therefore, due to the loss against Saint Louis, the Rams were out after the first day. Being the A-10s, there were some very difficult matches the Rams faced, but they played their best and pushed hard straight through to the end.
Overall, this was a great season for Fordham’s men’s tennis team. They improved their game as the year went along, and won more tournaments than they lost. Most of the team will be returning to the courts next year, but there are two graduating seniors who will be leaving: Tomas Cosmai and Nick Borak. They were seniors honored at Senior Day last week. The team will no doubt miss them, but is looking forward to its next season.
